Just a few days ago, we first learned that the upcoming Elder Scrolls Online would eschew the free-to-play model in favor of a standard $15/month subscription that would provide what General Manager Matt Firor called '100 percent access to the game.' Yesterday, though, Firor revealed in a new interview that the game will also include a shop that lets players purchase non-vital items and services with real money.

'There won't be anything like bonus points, but we'll have a shop to buy kind of fun stuff and services too, like name changes and things like that,' Firor said in an interview with German site Buffed. 'But it's not part of the core game. Anything in the core game is included in the subscription.'

It's hard to know exactly what Firor means by 'fun stuff,' but it's likely the game will charge additional money for purely cosmetic items and other things that don't directly affect gameplay. Still, some players may bristle at being asked to pay additional money for anything on top of purchasing the base game and paying a monthly fee for access.

Back in July, game developer Blizzard also announced that it would add a cash shop to its subscription-based MMO World of Warcraft in certain regions. The shop will sell players items that directly affect gameplay stats, from experience buffs to Charms of Good Fortune to pets and mounts. That move follows the company's controversial deep integration of a real-money auction house into the gameplay of Diablo III.

Gold is needed for many things in Elder Scrolls Online. Things such as horses, pack and bank slots, reallocating skill and attribute points, and even many basic items from vendors, cost a lot of money. This is a guide on how to make the most out of non-obvious methods and make a small fortune.

Basic Principles[edit]

Gold Buying By Real Money Is A Bad Practice In ESO ...

  • You can get a better price selling to another player than a vendor. Try not to set your prices too high as other players may also be struggling for gold. Also, players will likely only be interested in a small fraction of items, such as rare high-level gear and crafting materials.
    • Trading directly with other players can also cut prices dramatically compared to vendors. Note that the game takes a 1% listing fee when posting an item to a Guild Trader, and an additional 7% Guild Cut, of which 3.5% actually goes towards the Guild Bank of the guild that you listed the item with.
  • Questing. Nearly every quest has some sort of physical reward, either gold or items which can be sold. PvE quests generally have a better rate of return for gold than PvP.
    • It may be beneficial to destroy low-value items through crafting to gain the raw materials, which can be sold individually for a greater profit.
    • Many quests can be repeated, so look for fairly short and easy ones and repeat them over and over for gold and loot.
  • Crafting is available to all and requires only a small investment in perks to turn a profit, just craft what you find and sell it on. Harvest any and all crafting nodes you encounter.
    • When refining materials there is a chance to obtain a gem or other materials like tannin. This must be balanced against selling to crafters who would prefer the raw materials themselves and would pay more than the value of the gem.
  • Some vendors in Cyrodiil sell gear for Alliance Points. These items can then be sold elsewhere.
  • Value to weight ratios do not apply, always opt for the higher value item when freeing up inventory space.
  • At high levels, repeatedly defeating certain bosses (a process known as farming) can net you high-level gear that you can then sell to other players who do not or cannot yet do the dungeon.
  • Farming high-level mobs can grant a steady supply of gold.
  • Theft can be quite lucrative for the light-fingered. One pass through a city (looting all containers and picking all pockets) can leave you with items that can fetch at least 2k gold (50 basic items worth 40 gold each). Be careful not to pick up too high a bounty, and invest at least a point in Trafficker from the Legerdemain skill line to increase the amount of items you can fence to 110. You are also likely to pick up a number of other items you can launder and then sell, such as recipes and motifs.
  • You can farm mobs and bosses in the Imperial City for Tel Var Stones. One of the quickest ways to turn Tel Var Stones into gold is to purchase Waxed Apothecary Satchels from your alliance's Tel Var General Merchant. Waxed Apothecary Satchels have a random assortment of Reagents that can be sold to other players for gold.
  • You can dig for treasure with the Antiquities system.

Crafting Required[edit]

How To Make ESO Feel More Like An Elder Scrolls Game?

Multiple Characters[edit]

It is possible to become an expert in all forms of crafting, but only at the loss of skill points for use in weapon and armor skills. Unless you are roleplaying a crafter this inhibits your freedom to build a character. However, you can make a secondary character whose use is to make maximum use of all the resources you find by being an expert crafter. If you make other players aware that you are a high-level crafter they may come to you to craft better items for them, establishing a market base where they will bring you resources to craft in return for a reasonable profit-margin on the resulting goods.

  1. Your main character goes out into the world and loots and gathers everything in sight.
  2. Your main character deposits all resources and unused items into a bank.
  3. Your secondary character refines pre-made items into resources and crafts new items.
  4. Your secondary character deposits all items into the bank.
  5. Your main character takes the items and sells all unusable items.
